Another Republican enters Indiana AG race
INDIANAPOLIS (Legal Newsline)–The chief deputy in the Indiana attorney general’s office announced Friday that he is seeking the Republican nomination for state attorney general.
Greg Zoeller, chief deputy to Attorney General Steve Carter, joins two-term Valparaiso Mayor Jon Costas, who is also vying for the GOP nomination at the June 2 state GOP convention.
“In the next seven weeks I intend to canvas the state seeking support from the 2,086 delegates who will nominate our candidate to carry on the work as our state’s attorney general,” Zoeller said.
“For most of my career, I have served the people of the state of Indiana and would consider it the highest honor as an attorney to serve them as attorney general,” he added.
Zoeller sought the Republican nomination for attorney general unsuccessfully in 1996. He has served as chief deputy since 2001. He also served as Vice President Dan Quayle’s public liaison and before that as Quayle’s aide when he was an Indiana senator.
Prominent Indianapolis attorney Linda Pence, a U.S. Justice Department lawyer, appears to be the likely Democratic nominee.
Carter, a Republican, announced recently that he would not seek a third term in office. He was re-elected in 2004 with 1.4 million votes, the most ever for a statewide candidate in Indiana.
