Chinese adoptions most Sars
Last Thursday, five years after careful deliberation, planning and minutiöser long agonised wait, they were finally ready to board a plane for the baby of their dreams.But as they were preparing to leave their country in Indiana, the couple was before a difficult decision.
The SARS virus, which is a flat rate by Asia, in its worst in the Chinese province of Guangdong, and the U.S. Center for Disease Control made a statement against any consultation non-essential travel in the region.
The only consulate in China handles adoptions is headquartered in Guangdong, and the adoption parents must travel in the province to their child in the country.
Laura Eppler said that for her, the decision was not difficult.
“We do not think our trip is not essential. For the last five years, I felt I was a Chinese child, who was a part of our family,” she said.
“Nothing would have stopped.”
Keith Wallace, director of the Agency USA adoption by families of Intercountry Adoption (FTIA), said the SARS epidemic was an additional concern for couples already shaken by the adoption process.
But he said that for many families, there was no question of relocation of their journey.
“To travel to China is an absolute necessity,” he said.
Others are more cautious. Theodore Kim, director of Service adoption U.S. Information Agency, said his organization was orientation families travel to China.
“If parents decide to leave so, we see only one parent, rather than two,” he added.
Mr. Kim said he is currently the subject of three families from his agency were ready to go to China to collect their children - and all three have been discussed, if the risk of travel.
