Civil Rights Heritage Center moves forward
The city of South Bend’s Department of Community and Economic Development has pledged $ 450000 for the renovation of the former Engman Natatorium Indiana University South Bend’s Civil Rights Heritage Center. The installation is likely to open by the fall of 2009.
The vision of Indiana University South Bend’s Civil Rights Heritage Center, the former Engman Natatorium one step closer to completion Friday with an additional investment of the city of South Bend.
The South Bend Sanitation Commission approved a report on the progress of the renovation of the facility in 1040 Washington St. W., with an additional commitment of the city Department of Community economy and promoting invest $ 450000 for the renovation of the facility.
The additional resources will be for Civil Rights Heritage Center to be ready for occupancy as early as this summer, while IUSB continue the additional work until the end of the inside and outside land, including a garden of peace in the former pool. The installation is likely to open in 2009.

The funding comes from $ 565103 generated by new tax revenue in western Washington Area Development, a tax increment financing or TIF-circle. Tax dollars in a TIF captured to be used inside the border established by law and district for infrastructure improvements related to renovate.
TIF use of resources, the city previously demolished the old barn-Pool, terminal and obsolete mechanical equipment.
