Dells view education is the best way in the fight against spyware
The computer maker Dell (Dell) and the Internet non-profit Foundation of education are the lights, they ask what computer spyware to support the initiative to prevent adverse reactions to consumers, spyware. The couple plans to print and online resources and partnerships with suppliers of security as part of the education system.
Dell and the foundation want to reach at least 63 million people, almost the entire U.S. population of broadband users. The Foundation aims to educate the public and policymakers on the Internet.
“This is something that we feel to the entire industry needs a leader,” said Mike George, general manager of Dell’s national consumers. He said more than 15% of calls in support Dell Technical are related to spyware, from 2% about a year ago. “This is a real problem.”
A survey carried out under the initiative to note that over 90% of computers in the USA carry some form of spyware and the majority of computer users do not know how to identify or remove them.
The Federal Trade Commission recognizes that the definition of spyware is a challenge. The April, the Commission wrote to Congress to testify: “Some definitions of spyware can be as wide as software, the advantage is benign, software, but which is an advantage, abused or software that poorly written or the code ineffective. In fact, it is significant that the debate whether ‘adware’ should be considered spyware. ”
However, “spyware appears to be a new and rapidly growing practice that the risk of serious harm to the consumer,” wrote the FTC. Indeed, the FTC announced last week, his first appeal against an alleged spyware distributor. The federal law is also available in the factories.
Lydia Parnes, Director-in-Office of FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, Consumer spy welcomed the initiative and said that such efforts are essential for the protection of consumers.
But the question remains whether educators can be faster than criminals can be towers. Online, identity theft and fraud in the context - can against attacks on users of spyware or deception, in the case of phishing messages - continue to increase despite efforts to struggle against these flights.
