Surges losses but few victims of violations of Data
The flight last May seemed scary. The personal data of more than 26 million former military personnel was stolen from the apartment of an employee, the Department of Veterans Affairs. Personal data of the worker and a laptop hard drive additional veterans’ names, dates of birth and social security numbers - the Nuggets coveted by identity thieves.
Privacy Policy dark groups warned that 26 million people could be victims politicians expressed their indignation and Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales praised show “zero tolerance” in cases of identity theft on data lost by veterans.
Last month, the case was resolved when three youths were to what is presented as a routine break into the home in the suburbs of Maryland. They took jewelry and cash, with the laptop and hard drive. “They were a bunch of young thieves break into houses,” said Lt. Mike Mancuso, deputy director of the major crimes division of Montgomery County Police Department. “She did not know what they had.”
The veterans’ laptop episode underscores the difference between data loss and malicious data theft - a distinction, glossed has often been ignored or in the recent wave of alarming information data breaches by government agencies, universities, companies and hospitals. In most instances are the consequences - financial and otherwise - loss of data was small.
In the last 12 months, only the personal records of nearly 73 million people, social insurance numbers for credit card accounts, lost or stolen are reported in incidents ID Analytics, San Diego, the detection of fraud on banking services, mobile phone operators and other companies. The sum is the equivalent of nearly four Americans.
