Volunteer lawmaker dies at 92

John M. Harlan ‘vocational training, policy and personal further a lasting effect on Wayne County and Indiana.

The long Richmond lawyer, civic leader and the legislature passed away Wednesday. He was 92

“John has lived a good life and was an excellent citizen,” said Robert Bever of the law firm of Boston, Bever, sword, Cross & Chidester. Harlan father, Harlan Denver, founded the company in 1911.

“He will missed by all members of his family, friends and partners,” said Bever.

As a prosecutor, Harlan has worked with his father from 1942 until his death of his father in 1968 as part of Harlan, Harlan, Schussler and the cellar. He represented the First National Bank and Bank One (now Chase Bank) for many years and has served on its board.

He was deputy prosecutor from 1945 to 1948, during the period when he arranged for the purchase of Wayne County’s first “Drunk-O-Meter”, the forerunner of the current Breathalyzer test.

From 1949 to 1954, he was representative of a State. He drafted a bill creating the Superior Court of Wayne and the author and led the fight for the abolition of the tax payment system for public servants. He went to a state senator from 1955 to 1958.

While in the legislature, he was in the definition of the Indiana State Museum. It has a long Indiana State Museum Society member and from 1980 to 1981 he was chairman of board.

In Wayne County, he was heavily involved in the Wayne County Historical Museum, with a membership from 1947 to 1981. He served as chairman of 19 times.

He donated his Ford Model T and surely helped several antique cars for the museum’s collection. Harlan past, his love for cars and the museum of his son, John “Jack” and Jim Harlan Harlan. Jim Harlan, the museum is now the executive director.

Harlan won in 1999, Charles A. Rode zone Award for the conduct of philanthropy and the Commonwealth in recognition of his contributions of time, talent and financial support to promote and develop the Wayne County Foundation and a Foundation for Historical Museum.

Its efforts by the effect of many lives, including Bever.

Harlan Bever companies in 1976 a law as a secretary and joined the company two years later. Bever always appreciates the chance to Harlan and its partners have on him.

Bever told banking and real estate law, Harlan and practices for the continued use of knowledge.
